Following the two #1 radio hits “Extreme Days” and
“Somebody’s Watching”, tobyMac has finally unveiled
his first full-length solo project, MOMENTUM, on
Forefront Records.
tobyMac describes MOMENTUM as “fusion hip-hop…I like
to just speak straight ahead…Hip-hop is always about
community. In my case, it’s about my family, the
family of God.” He goes on to say, “I’ve always
written from the perspective of moving people to the
next level of thought, feeling, soul, and God
consciousness…causing people to think.”
This album exceeds expectations on so many levels.
Fans expected a return to hip-hop and rap roots on
this solo project. MOMENTUM is all that and so much
more! “Get This Party Started” sets the mood for the
entire record. tobyMac chants, “Everybody Everybody in
the place to be. Open up your mind and let your soul
be free!” This song also features the rock guitar
style of “Extreme Days” with Michael Tait making a
guest appearance on backing vocals.
“J-Train” is my favorite track on the album. It is
also the new single featuring the one and only Kirk
Franklin. On J-Train, tobyMac continues to improve on his
vocal range and smooth r&b sensibility. He exclaims!
“It’s the J-Train baby, we depart from right here!”
Other notable tracks include, “Wonderin Why”, a
re-visit to the old skool rap of early DC Talk.
MOMENTUM slows down on a few songs, including the laid
back beat styled “Love Is In The House”.
Overall, MOMENTUM is the most fun tobyMac related record
since FREE AT LAST. He sums it up best
on the title track, “We’ve Got Momentum Baby!”
