Mrs. Coretta Scott King, first lady of human and civil rights died the evening of Jan. 30. Mrs. King, wife of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was 78. The family stated “We appreciate the prayers and condolence from people across the country.”
The funeral arrangements will be made public once finalized.
Sign of the times: The Federal Bureau of Investigation under director J. Edgar Hoover was encouraged to try to damage King’s reputation in the 1960’s under the Kennedy administration. Hoover, with the approval of President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, established phone taps and bugs to gather discriminating evidence against King.
