A rainy day did not prevent a couple of hundred media and other interested parties from packing the Frist Center for the Visual Arts at 10:30 A.M. this morning to hear who made the Dove Awards Nominees list. The most prestigious awards presented annually by the Gospel Music Association, the Dove Nominations were announced by last year’s winners Third Day, Nicole C. Mullen, and Nichole Nordeman with Frank Breeden adding a few comments.
Reading a long list of names could have been a tedious task, but the reading of the roll was interspersed with humor supplied compliments of Third Day as the Spanish-language nominees were rolled out in quasi-Spanish accents and Steven Curtis Chapman was the only name read for Artist of the Year… at least for a few beats!
ForeFront recording artist TobyMac received eight Dove Award nominations in conjunction with his top-selling CD, MOMENTUM. Three other artists garnered eight nominations apiece. Steven Curtis Chapman, was nominated for a total of 8 Dove Awards including: Artist Of The Year, Male Vocalist Of The Year and Song Of The Year. Rebecca St. James and Nicole C. Mullen also received eight nominations while Michael W. Smith was awarded seven nods.
Reigning “Artist” and “Group of the Year” Third Day, together with lead vocalist Mac Powell, also received an impressive seven Dove Award nominations. The nominations follow the November release of Third Day’s critically acclaimed and fastest selling recording to date, Come Together.
After leading the list of award winners during last years ceremony, taking home wins in five categories including awards for “Artist” and “Group of the Year,” a feat that had not been accomplished in 20-years, Third Day has the opportunity to be the first band in history to repeat that achievement.
Franklin walked away with nominations for Producer of the Year and double nominations for producer/performer for Urban Recorded Song of the Year (“Thank You,” Kingdom Come, The Soundtrack; Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary) and Special Event Album of the Year (Kingdom Come, The Soundtrack).Selah, producer Brown Bannister and newcomer Shaun Groves also all received five nominations. Artists with four nominations are Point of Grace, Fred Hammond, Shirley Caesar and The Benjamin Gate. Producer Monroe Jones joined them with four nods. In all, more than 25 artists earned three or more nominations.
Shaun Groves led all new artists
with a remarkable five Dove Award nominations. In addition to his nomination
for New Artist of the Year, Groves’ “Welcome Home” received nods in the Song
of the Year and Pop/ Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year categories (the
latter of which counts as two nominations-one as songwriter and one as
performer). Meanwhile, his debut album, Invitation to Eavesdrop, was included as a contender for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year along with projects
from veteran acts Steven Curtis Chapman, Point of Grace, FFH, Avalon and
Nicole C. Mullen.
Superchic[k], whose KARAOKE SUPERSTARS has been a top-seller for inpop, was
nominated for Rock Album of the Year, as well as Rock Recorded Song of the
Year for their #1 hit, “Barlow Girls.” Superchic[k] spent much of 2001 on
movie and TV soundtracks including the closing credits song for “Legally
Blonde,” as well as ABC’s “Alias,” MTV’s “The Real World” and “Road Rules,”
and the soundtrack for the movie “The Glass House.”
Ardent Records top rock band Skillet received two Dove nominations yesterday for the Gospel Music Association’s 33rd Annual Dove Awards. Following the release of its critically acclaimed and fastest selling album to date, Alien Youth, Skillet garnered a nod for “Modern Rock/Alternative Album of the Year” for the project. The No. 1 radio hit and title cut from Alien Youth was also nominated for “Rock Recorded Song of the Year.”
David Phelps received his first nominations ever as a solo artist when nominees were announced this morning.
Phelps was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, and his CD, David Phelps, was nominated for Inspirational Album of the Year. Phil Naish, producer of the CD, and Spring Hill Music Group, Phelps’ label, are also nominees because of their participation on this album.
Nominations were announced in 41 categories. The Songwriter of the Year category was not announced today.
The 33rd Annual Dove Awards will be held at the Grand Ole Opry House on Thursday, April 25, 2002.
