Over thirty five years ago now, I went from New Zealand to Canada, to do some teaching in Nova Scotia.
I couldn’t wait for the winter, and all the snow. I had seen many books showing pictures of beautiful snow crystals, all different forms. They said no two crystals were alike.
The anticipation grew, until the first snowstorm.
Something was very wrong. Where were the beautiful shapes I was expecting? All that was falling were big, white ‘globs.’ For two years that is all I saw falling, and I thought it was a load of rubbish what they were saying about their remarkable shapes.
What I didn’t realise was that the shape of snow crystals varies according to the temperature and humidity of both the air in which they form, and the air in which they fall. ‘Dry’ snow falls in very cold, dry conditions. It has very small crystals and blows into snowdrifts easily. ‘Wet’ snow forms when the air is very moist and warm enough for the crystals to bond together. That was the science of it all.
Then one night it happened. I was waiting in a car which was parked under a street light, and soon, there they were, tiny snowflakes clinging to the glass and sparkling like jewels in the light. I wished I’d had a magnifying glass to better appreciate the uniqueness of their shapes. They were truly beautiful, and I felt as if I was privy to some eternal secret. That was enough to convince me of the truth. I had experienced it.
How many times do we believe something with our heads, but the reality of its truth does not touch our hearts?
What about God’s love for us? Just because we may not know the actuality of it, or believe in it, that does not deny loves existence.
The Bible explains it this way:
“This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven.” 1 Jn 4:9,10.
