“The Herdmans were the worst kids in the whole history of the world.” So begins Barbara Robinson’s hilarious and heartwarming tale of the day six young hellions took over the annual Christmas pageant.
The pageant is a tradition at the little church in this small southern town. Of course, no one ever wants to be in it – except for snooty Alice Wendleken, who is always The Virgin Mary. But then the Herdman kids, who have never heard the Christmas story, decide to audition – much to the dismay of the director, Grace Bradley. Pandemonium ensues as Ralph Herdman announces that Mary was ‘pregnant;’ Imogene Herdman sets off the fire alarm by smoking cigars in the ladies room; and Ollie Herdman announces his plot to assassinate King Herod. Somehow the wonder of the season still manages to shine through as the simple Gospel story unfolds in Saltshaker Theater’s production of Barbara Robinson?s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. “Hey! Unto you a child is born!”
“Reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever has been a tradition in our home for years, and it has become my favorite holiday story,” says director Paula Parker. “Often Christmas is so familiar that it can become stressful, tedious, and even boring. Or we think that it?s ?all about ME!? I love the fact that in Ms. Robinson?s play, just like in the Biblical account of the Nativity, God chose to reveal Himself to the outcasts of the world.”
