Five-time Dove Award winner, Nicole C. Mullen, is starting to enjoy the fruits of her hard work. Honored with the title of the Gospel Music Association’s “Songwriter of the Year,” Mullen was also recently named SESAC’s “2001 Christian Songwriter of the Year”. (SESAC is a performing rights organization with headquarters in Nashville and offices in New York, Los Angeles, and London.)
In addition to her songwriting accolades, Mullen received her first GRAMMY nomination for “Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year” for Talk About It. The 44th Annual Grammy awards will take place on Feb. 27, 2002, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and air on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. (EST/PST).
Mullen has also garnered eight nominations for the 33rd Annual Dove Awards. Nominations are in the following categories:
· “Song of the Year” for “Call on Jesus” (songwriter)
· “Female Vocalist of the Year”
· “Artist of the Year”
· “Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year” (artist)
· “Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year” (songwriter)
· “Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year” for Talk About It (artist)
· “Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year” for Talk About It (producer)
· “Short Form Video of the Year” for “Call on Jesus”
Her sophomore project Talk About It, released in August of 2001, follows a highly successful year for Mullen. Last April she garnered four of the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Awards at the 32nd Annual Dove Awards ceremony, making her second in the industry for total Dove Award wins in 2001. Mullen’s accolades included both “Song of the Year” and “Pop Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year” for her self-penned smash hit single, “Redeemer,” and the coveted award for Songwriter of the Year, making Mullen the first female to wear the title in over a decade.
“Call on Jesus,” the first single from Talk About It, went to #1 on the Inspirational (Inspo) radio charts and #2 on the Adult Contemporary (AC) radio charts.
Nicole C. Mullen has been a songwriter for years, co-writing the 1998 GMA Song of the Year, “On My Knees,” performed by GRAMMY nominated label mate Jaci Velasquez. Mullen honed her performing skills singing backup vocals and choreographing for such acts as Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and the Newsboys, while children around the world recognize her as the vocalist on the “The Veggie Tales Theme Song” from the acclaimed, best-selling kids video series.
