A Nation at War

Tonight President Bush followed up on his promise to take action if Saddam Hussein did
not disarm and/or step down. The purpose of this article is not to address the political
issues, but to focus on a Christian response to this war.
As Christians, God calls us to pray for our leaders. Please join me in lifting up President
Bush, his advisors, our government leaders and military leaders. Pray that wisdom would
surround them and that the hand of God would guide them. Let us lift up our brave soldiers and their families as well for their safety, that they would find comfort and
strength through Christ.
God also calls us to pray for our enemies. Please also pray for Saddam Hussein, and those
who influence him. Pray for the Iraqi people – many are Christians and many are persecuted, but the fact is, we should even pray for those who want to kill us. Jesus told us in Matthew 5:43 to “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” That means we have an obligation to lift up in prayer terrorists and those Iraqis who plan
us harm. Pray that their hearts would be turned from evil and turned towards God.
As Christians we are also called upon to have faith and to not let these times discourage us or cause us to falter. In Matthew 24: 6 Jesus says, “You will hear of wars and rumors of war, but see to it that you are not alarmed.” In Matthew 24:12 & 13 Jesus continues, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
God calls us to have faith in troubled times, and His Son instructs us in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Rather than worrying about tomorrow and the things over which we have no control, we are given enough faith to handle each day is it comes. And, while we may not be able to control the decisions made by our world leaders, we can pray for them each day as we walk in the faith which God provides.
May you walk in faith, pray without ceasing, stand firm, and find peace in troubled times.
