The 10th Anniversary Music Midtown Festival is pleased to announce that it will feature two of gospel music’s
best-loved and most sought after performers, contemporary gospel R&B
sensation Tonex and traditional gospel phenom Richard Smallwood & Vision, on
its ever popular Gospel Stage on Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the Civic Center.
Atlanta’s very own gospel choir Deeper Shade of Soul, which consists of
choir members from the Atlanta Church of Christ, will kick off the
celebration at 2:00pm.
While the Music Midtown Festival is world renown for its diverse lineup of
legendary performers and today’s superstar acts in Rock, Pop, Urban, and
Roots music, to many the festival’s best-kept secret is its Gospel Stage,
which since its introduction three years ago has featured some of America’s
top gospel artists sharing the stage with local favorites.
And this year is certainly no exception. A Grammy Award Winner and world
class composer, pianist and arranger, Richard Smallwood has changed the face
of gospel music with his impeccable blend of classical movements and
traditional gospel and has just received two 2003 Stellar Gospel Music
Awards for his new album, Persuaded – Live In D.C. Tonex is also hot off
receiving a 2003 Stellar Award, winning in the “Best Rap/Hip Hop Gospel CD
of the Year” category for his groundbreaking release 02. The 26 year old
musical prodigy has been mesmerizing gospel and mainstream audiences
everywhere ever since the release of his debut album, Pronounced Toe-Nay,
which catapulted Tonex into gospel music super-stardom.
“The Gospel Stage has always been one of the festival’s true gems,” notes
festival founder Alex Cooley. “We’re excited to have two of gospel music’s
top performers at this year’s 10th anniversary festival.”
