~ Word for the Day: The Great Dragon–Revelation 12:7–9. NIV ~
The Great Dragon
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.
Revelation 12:7–9. NIV
Biblical Dragons
Dragons are mentioned in the Bible at least 35 times in the King James translation. In the Old Testament they are ambiguous in nature, but in the New Testament, dragons are a consistently a symbol of evil and rebellion against God.
Revelation 12:7–9
The book of Revelations tells the story of a great dragon that battles with the angel Michael. The Bible says the dragon and all his angels were not strong enough to prevail against Michael, so he was thrown out of heaven and hurled down to earth where he is actively rebelling against God to this day:
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
But that’s not the end of the story. Revelations 12:10 continues with this:
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.”
We have already won the battle. Our accuser has been hurled down. All we have to do is resist Satan and follow Christ, and the devil’s accusations have no power over us.
