Fifty years ago, celebrated author and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis completed what would eventually become a classic of children’s literature: The Chronicles of Narnia.
In the introduction to this book, “Spirituality, Art and Narnia – The Middle Path and Roads Less Traveled,” Greg Wright states his case that since The Chronicles of Narnia are both a work of great literature and spiritual truth, the forms must be appreciated separately. As Wright says, “…this is a dual appreciation, not a simultaneous one.” For this purpose, Wright enlists the talents of his wife Jenn, George Rosok, and Kathy Bledsoe to write a synopsis of each book in the The Chronicles of Narnia series, followed by a literary analysis by and finally a spiritual commentary. This team switches hats on each book and their various styles make Two Roads enjoyable.
One of the more interesting essays is in “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” where Kathy Bledso is wearing the literary hat and conducts an interview with King Caspian, Edmund, Lucy, Reepicheep and Eustace Scrubb. Another enjoyable essay is by Gregg and Jenn Wright for synopsis of “The Last Battle” where they provide a “Narnia News Roundup” with news stories summing up the plot of the book.
Two Roads is both an enjoyable read and an informative one. If you are a newcomer to Narnia or a hardcore fan, you will want to add this to your Narnia library.
