As a Nashville native whose parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents were from the Middle Tennessee region, “The Flood of the Century” is a name too small for the devastation which occurred in Nashville. Through my parents and grandparents, I have heard stories that go back over 100 years, of ice skating on the Cumberland, of tornadoes, droughts and other harsh weather, but in none of their stories or journals have I read about terrible flooding such as occurred in Nashville on May 1 and 2, 2010.
Musicians lost their homes and instruments, and my own brother lost everything in the flood waters that rose above homes and businesses in Nashville. For four days I went without electricity, and for more than a week I had no phone or internet connection. The AT&T plant was flooded, so the entire city went without phone service. The Christian Activities site came to a screeching halt as I was unable to update the website.
The following personal account, slideshow and guest editorial will provide a glimpse into “The Flood of the Century” — the terrible flood of 2010 that devastated Nashville.
