The Culture of Exceptionism?

We live in a culture paralyzed by “Exceptionism.” The idea being that one
can always find an exception to every rule and therefore, rules are suspect,
if not suspended altogether. But, as Ravi Zacharias points out “Just because
one must jump out of a second floor window to escape a fire does not mean
that as a rule he should exit the house in this manner.” Nice perspective.
The culture of Exceptionism is one of great skepticism and if one is
immersed in it, it can lead to all kinds of despair. A lack of certainty
breeds a lack of security which in turn breeds a lack of joy. Perhaps you
can sense it all around you? But do take courage, it’s not a new problem.
The ancient prophet Hosea once described it this way: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6
So, is there a solution? I believe there is. Shining through the darkness of
uncertainty and vagueness, with the clarity of a lighthouse beacon, comes
the book of Proverbs, offering God’s wisdom for everyday life. It’s short,
pithy sayings bring us the light of God’s wisdom, easy to understand,
relevant, practical.
