The Bug on the Windshield

Have you ever started your car and noticed a bee or other insect sitting on your windshield? As you start to go forward, the bug will grab hold of something invisible to your eyes and somehow hang on to the windshield. I have watched their little legs strain as they keep their tiny feet dug in to some microscopic flaw in the glass where only a bug’s foot could find purchase. As your vehicle accelerates, although buffeted by the wind, the insect struggles to hang on for dear life until finally your speed increases to the point the bug is carried aloft.
I often think how surprised the insect must be to discover he is safely sailing through the air in freedom and how much happier he must be airborn than clinging to the windshield of a moving car.
I was watching one such bug yesterday and it occurred to me how much like that bug I so frequently. I grab ahold of something I think is important, something I think will bring me safety and security. As life moves forward, I hang on for dear life to my “security.” I dig my heels in, I strain, I struggle to hold on until finally either my “security” is snatched away… or I am.
What I never seem to grasp is that if I will just let go of my false security, I can allow the Hand of God to carry me where He will. Much like the bug on my windshield, I will be carried aloft to freedom.
Matthew 6:19-21Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
