Parenting, God’s perfect training course for adults. Children teach us some of the most important lessons of Christ, if only we will listen…they are; Unconditional Love, Bold Faith and Humility. We think that we are the only teacher in this relationship, but we are the student just as much, if not more often. The surprising thing is that our children have no idea that they are giving us some of the most valuable lessons we will ever receive!
The first is Unconditional Love, (John 3:16). We think that we have the market cornered on this one but we need to stop and see how much of this we get back in return! Regardless of how the world perceives us or our what our outward appearance is, our children love us! They don’t care where we work, what we drive, what we wear, how much we weigh, or what our financial statements show. They just want us to scoop them up cover them in kisses and hugs and tell them that we love them! Even as they get older they crave the same affirmation, they just need it in a little different way. As parents, we need to soak up this aspect of life more often. We need to see these opportunities as “golden,” and stop to enjoy them! Especially when the day crashes down around us, that is when we need to find refuge in our home and tap into that blessing of Unconditional Love that God has placed there for us, in our children!
The second lesson is Bold Faith. When our children learn of Jesus and His love for them they apply that belief wholeheartedly to their life! They know that there is nothing their God cannot handle, no enemy too big for Him, that all we have to do trust, believe and praise Him.
“You have set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies to silence the foe and the avenger.” Psalm 8:1-2
Kids are amazing, they see the sovereignty of God and potential that He puts in us as parents long before we see it. They trust that we can and will do it, before we believe it! They know that God has entrusted us with their lives and all that comes with it! It is a wonderful honor and blessing when we stop long enough to let is sink in!
The third and probably the most often overlooked principle of being a parent, is humility. God eloquently demonstrates this through His Son Jesus. Christ humbled Himself, came in human form to love us, get close to us, experience “LIFE”, so that He could say..yes, I know what you are talking about, I understand! Our first clue as adults, before we have children is to see that Christ came as a “CHILD,” so there has got to be something pretty special in this Whole Experience and in every package that enters this world as a “CHILD”! The things that we have to do as parents, are usually not glamorous, easy or odor-free..but if God took on that role, shouldn’t we consider it an honor to follow in His footsteps…no matter the sacrifice or work!? Because no parent has given or suffered more than God the Father when He sent Christ to the cross for us!!
“He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matt. 18:2-4
Now in closing, if you are reading this and you are a Christian parent, take time to thank God for your salvation and all that comes with this blessings! Because those who do not have a relationship with Jesus can read the first few paragraphs and not understand what is being said, especially from the child’s perspective. Many children do not have the privilege of this type of upbringing, they have never experienced Unconditional Love, and have never seen Faith or Humility ….so acknowledge your BLESSINGS (some children have dealt with more pain than most adults will ever have in a lifetime). Take it a step further by committing to pray for those parents you know that don’t have salvation and for their children! You may never see the results but the benefit from those prayers will effect not only them but you and your family as well! It keeps you accountable for what God has graciously given you while at the same time moving mountains ! with prayer….the very first step in changing situations and eternal destinations! Parenting is an honor, a blessing, a gift and a calling…. remember to praise God in the good moments and the not-so-good moments!
“And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Matthew 18: 5-8
