The Black Watch and Band of the Welsh Guards Comes to Nashville

The legendary pipes, drums and highland dancers of Scotland’s The Black Watch join forces with the Band of the Welsh Guards to celebrate the music and time-honored traditions of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. On international tour, the performance of 90 men on stage features bagpipes, traditional military marches, drum solos, Celtic dancing and beloved songs for a spectacular, unforgettable evening for the entire family.

“Seeing The Black Watch and Band of the Welsh Guards is simply a breathtaking experience,” said Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC’s president and CEO. “The traditional regalia and majestic music is underscored by the sense of pride and tradition exhibited by their members. It’s incomparable to anything I’ve seen. It’s an honor for TPAC to present the heritage of other cultures the best way we know how – through the performing arts.”
The Black Watch was the first kilted regiment in the British Army and the first to introduce the bagpipe into the tradition of playing the troops into battle. Tracing back to 1624, the oldest Highland regiment is a fully-operational battalion in the modern British army, serving as the machine gun platoon. The soldiers take equal pride in their roles as machine gunners and performing artists, who are considered the “custodians of tradition and visible identity of the regiment.”
Formed in 1915, The Band of the Welsh Guards has also toured extensively across the world. Within its ranks the musicians come from a variety of backgrounds such as colleges, academics, other military bands and orchestras. Permanently based in London, they regularly appear for Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and frequently perform with The Royal Philharmonic.
