Tammy Faye Messner passed away on July 20, 2007. The Christian singer and talk show host, ex-wife of Jim Bakker, died peacefully in her home of colon cancer. A family service was held graveside in a private cemetery where Tammy’s ashes have been interred.
Tammy Faye is best known as the former wife of Jim Bakker, the disgraced televengalist, convicted felon and admitted adulterer. They married in 1961 and in 1974 became the hosts of a North Carolina-based talk show, which they renamed the PTL (Praise the Lord) Club. In 1980, the Bakkers attained national attention because of Jim’s affair with church secretary, Jessica Hahn.
In 1992, the Bakkers divorced and Tammy Faye wed Roe Messner, a family friend and business associate of the Bakkers, in 1993.
Tammy Faye was often the subject of ridicule during her years on television because of her extravagant eye makeup. In 2000, she was the subject of a fairly well-received documentary, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
She first battled colon cancer in 1996, when the disease was successfully treated. On March 19, 2004, just two weeks after her 62nd birthday, she announced she had lung cancer.
