Tale of the Poisonous Yuck Bugs by Aaron Reynolds

When it comes to children’s books, few can hold a candle to Dr. Seuss – the cadence of the rhyme, the creativity of the creatures, the message in the playful story. That is, until Tale of the Poisonous Yuck Bugs, by Aaron Reynolds.
The story takes place on the island of Gak, where two scary yuck-bugs have been tormenting passers-by with their insults. One day, they turn their poisonous words on each other, breaking the age-old yuck-bug rule not to talk yucky to other yuck-bugs. Immediately, the two get sick, and it isn’t until a passing watch-what-you-utterfly dispenses some kind words that they see the error of their ways and begin to heal.
Tale of the Poisonous Yuck Bugs illustrates the principles in Proverbs 12:18 in a Dr. Seuss-like lyrical poem that teaches a lesson without being preachy. The pictures are beautifully done; kids will love the bright colors and unique creatures. It’s a great book for kids learning to read, and a perfect book to read out loud.
