Bluefield College will kick off the fall 2001 semester with a huge
celebration. BC students will start classes Wednesday, August 22, but the
real fun will begin when contemporary praise and worship band SONICFLOOd
performs in concert, Thursday, August 23, as part of the school’s Welcome
Week festivities.
SONICFLOOd is not your typical modern rock Christian music band. Not
that you can tell from their music — their edgy pop melodies rival any top
selling bands in the contemporary Christian market. Nor can you tell from
media coverage — having been featured in and on the covers of many of
today’s top Christian magazines.
But, SONICFLOOd is not your typical Christian rock band. They are leaders in
the Christian music industry and are redefining the face of Christian music
today. In fact, in just 18 months SONICFLOOd has redefined the roll of
praise and worship not only within Christian music, but also within America.
With a vision and calling that has “always been about worship and joining
God in His will and purposes,” the short life of this band has truly been
about praising God.” And, on Thursday, August 23 area residents are invited
to join Bluefield College students and SONICFLOOd in a praise and worship
concert in Harman Chapel.
While there has been a notable growth in modern praise and worship music for
the last several years, SONICFLOOd has taken its place on the frontline of
the worship movement. The result: success that has traditionally been
reserved for veteran acts in Christian music. The group earned three of the
Gospel Music Association’s respected 2001 Dove Award nominations, including
New Artist of The Year, Rock Recorded Song of The Year and Praise and
Worship Album of the Year. The band took home the award for Praise and
Worship Album of the Year.
Radio has honored SONICFLOOd with two number one singles: “I Could Sing of
Your Love Forever” and “I Want to Know You.” And, since its release in 1999,
the band’s self-titled debut album has remained in the top ten of
Billboard’s Christian music sales chart, having sold over 500,000 units,
receiving a certified gold status.
SONICFLOOd shows, known as SONICPRAISe are designed to bring together
believers to worship and pray. The group began its first SONICPRAISe tour in
the fall of 2000 with a 32-city stint intended to not only entertain, but to
“bring God’s people together to change the nation one community at a time.”
“It’s really an honor to tour and see people around the country and the
world that share our passion for worship and a concern for their community,”
said Rick Heil, bandleader and spokesperson. “Each night our mission is to
challenge our audiences to pray for their cities and ignite them to be
worshipers of God.”
Last summer SONICFLOOd also played for the Flevo Festival in Europe,
performed for more than 30,000 fans at Passion One Day 2000 in Memphis,
Tennessee, played for an official Billy Graham Association event in
Nashville, Tennessee, and traveled on the spring leg of the Newsboys 72-city
tour. This spring and summer, the band toured the Philippines and Canada and
performed concerts for more than 15 festivals and theme parks. The Bluefield
College show is part of SONICFLOOd’s fall tour to promote its new album,
“RESONATe,” scheduled for release in October 2001.
The SONICFLOOd show at BC will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel.
Advance tickets are now on sale for $10 per person. Groups of ten or more
