Skillet Down Under

After just four electrifying performances across Australia and New Zealand as part of Sonfest and the Parachute Festival, multiple Dove Award nominee and Ardent Records’ rock band Skillet claimed the No. 16 position on Australia’s Christian retail chart for their critically acclaimed and fastest selling album to date, Alien Youth. Throughout the 3-day, non-denominational music festival held each January across Australia (a summer month for the southern hemisphere), Skillet brought each crowd to their feet with its dynamic rock performances in the cities of Brisbane (Queensland), Sydney and Melbourne.
“No one in Australia was prepared for the performance Skillet threw at our audience,” says Dale Bray, Sonfest founder. “We were captivated, energized, moved and challenged. It was the most exhilarating 75 minutes of our festival.”
One week following the band’s Down Under performances in Australia, Skillet performed as part of the Parachute Festival held in Auckland, New Zealand. Hailed as the largest Christian music festival in the world based on a per capita basis, Parachute 2002 featured 7 music stages, 160 bands and speakers from around the world and drew an incredible 22,000 music fans from New Zealand’s population of 3.5 million.
“Skillet turned the heat up for New Zealand’s Parachute 2002 on opening night, January 25th – sending the smoke billowing, the lights flashing and the pans flying,” says Shacky, label manager for EMI CMG/Chordant, Parachute Distribution New Zealand. “To get a 22,000-strong crowd warmed, Skillet dealt with it instantaneously as if it were as simple as turning up the gas. The Kiwi’s instantly responded to the sonic sizzle, bouncing and singing to a charged and passionate performance.”
With over 200 scheduled performances each year, Skillet is currently in the midst of performing for more than 80,000 fans as part of the Acquire the Fire tour. The band is also preparing to launch the spring leg of its highly successful Alien Youth tour beginning February 28 in Live Oak, FL. The tour follows last fall’s 44-city headline tour and brings Skillet’s most significant production to date into an additional 35 markets across the country, including Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Nashville, Indianapolis and Grand Rapids, among others. More information on the band’s performances and Acquire the Fire tour cities/dates can be found at alienyouth or acquirethefire.
Skillet recently received two Dove nominations for the Gospel Music Association’s 33rd Annual Dove Awards. Following the August 28 release of its media and fan favorite, Alien Youth, Skillet garnered a nod for “Modern Rock/Alternative Album of the Year” for the project. The No. 1 radio hit and title cut from Alien Youth was also nominated for “Rock Recorded Song of the Year.”
