Howard Publishing author and senior pastor of Christ Community Church (Franklin, Tenn.) Scotty Smith preached to a combined service of seven Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) churches. The event marked the first time the churches have ever come together for a united service. Held at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach Oct. 3, the event was followed by a well-received guest appearance on The 700 Club.
Delivering a popular message of God’s redeeming grace that inspired his book, Objects of His Affection, to the united congregation in Virginia Beach, which included members from Norfolk and Suffolk areas, Smith went on to discuss the book on The 700 Club. During The 700 Club guest appearance that was taped Oct. 4 and televised Oct. 5, Smith explained how his mother’s death affected him and his discovery of the compelling love of God.
Besides featuring his book, Smith also talked about why, since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, there has been a definite increase of attendance in his new church building, in which his congregation moved just two days prior to the tragedy. More than that, Scotty points out that many who were slack in their prayer life are really praying now.
“Those who were asleep in Zion are waking up,” says Smith. “It’s a very encouraging time to be preaching. People are hanging on every word.”
Smith’s segment aired on The 700 Club on Friday, Oct. 5 and can also be found transcribed on www.cbn.com under The 700 Club link. More information on Christ Community Church and Objects of His Affection can be found at christcommunity.
In 1997 Smith co-authored Unveiled Hope with Michael Card. Two years later, he and his close friend Steven Curtis Chapman co-wrote the book Speechless to coincide with the release of Chapman’s now platinum-selling recording, Speechless. Smith, who holds an M.A. in New Testament Studies from Westminster Theological Seminary and did his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina, also founded Christ Community Church along with his wife, Darlene, and five other couples. The church now has more than 3,000 members and has been featured on ABC’s Prime Time Live.
