Reflecting Upon September 11

On Sept. 11, I believe that the devastation wrought against America represents a new crossroad. Since the disaster, many, many people are echoing “God Bless America.” The question that concerns me is will America once again be a blessing to God?
To be a blessing to God, Americans must enter into a relationship that meets God on the terms He has laid out for us in the Bible. We have standards for people to enter into and to maintain relationship with us. God, too, has His standards for the terms of how we engage Him, enter into relationship with Him and thus secure his blessing. God has conditions which we must meet if we are to maintain our status as a blessed nation that has found favor in His sight.
God has blessed America with two intangibles: Freedom and Safety. Without God’s hand protecting us to give us safety within our borders, our freedom becomes our greatest liability. On Sept 11, 2001, God removed His hand of safety, to give us a wake up call- that without His blessing terrible, terrible things can happen to us at the hands of our enemies. The evil that fell upon America found its opportunity through our freedom. The enemy did not fire any of its own weapons. It did not use any of its own technology, and it took advantage of the blessing of our freedom to obtain the training necessary to carry out the deadly and destructive actions. In the face of this catastrophe, it indeed is appropriate for Americans to call out to God to bless us.
The first step we must take to position ourselves to obtain God’s blessing is that we must believe 2Cor 5: 19 that God was in Christ on the Cross, reconciling us to Himself by not counting our sins against us. That is, we must believe that while Christ was on the Cross, God laid our sins on Him, and thus Christ bore the punishment that is due us. God?s wrath against our sins is satisfied by the death Christ died for us, and now God can extend His love to us. When we receive Christ and accept John 3:16 as true we enter into a relationship with God. Do you believe that you are a sinner, that you have done things that God – the ultimate judge and lawgiver – says are wrong? If you acknowledge this, then you understand God’s perspective that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness. Do you believe John 3:16 that God is willing to forgive you if you take Him at His word and receive His Son as your personal Lord and Savior?
America should not go on thinking that we will continue our favored nation status with God, if each of us does not make it our personal business to enter into a relationship with God on His terms. God is the potter, and we are the clay.
We cannot think God is pleased with us when we want to take down the Ten Commandments from court house walls – even as we are trying criminals who steal and murder and thus break the Ten Commandments. Jesus said, “allow the little children to come to me,” and we want to forbid them from praying to Him in school. God says in Jeremiah 1:5 that “I knew you when you were in your mother’s womb,” and we want to abort babies. God invented conception and procreation. Life is His to take not ours. His perspective is that the product of procreation t is a baby not a “choice.” In Malachi, God says that “I hate divorce!” Yet people who claim to know God and understand His ways, have gotten divorced and are getting divorced.
In Matthew 24:37, Jesus said that when the end of the age comes, it will be as in the days of Noah. Genesis: 6:5 tells us what the days of Noah were like: “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.” None of our intelligence community – no American – would ever have imagined that 19 people, many of them well educated with wives and children and other families members, would take their own lives along with thousands of others by taking several large commercial airliners, from various locations, all at the same time and intentionally crashing them into crowded buildings, teeming with innocent civilians. Such a wicked inclination has never before entered into the hearts of men – until now. (Keep in mind the Kamikazes of WWII did their deeds against military targets.) Only God’s blessing can protect our free and open society from such evil inclinations
I am deeply saddened and troubled by the events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, and I am pleased that so many people seem to be calling out to God and see Him for the hope and comfort He truly is. I too pray for God to bless America. I hope, moreover, that our country will be a blessing to God. It is not how we feel about what we are doing that is paramount. It is what God says about what we are doing that is paramount. I hope our country will be a friend of God. I hope that we will identify with Him and His desires and expectations for us. I hope that we will invite Him into our hearts and that we ask Him to conform us to His will and likeness. I hope that there will be reciprocation between God and us – for therein resides the foundation for our blessing.
Yes, it is right for us to pray “God Bless America!” I think that the future of our nation, however, lies in whether or not we choose to be a blessing to God. For in the absence of the restraint of God?s Holy Spirit working to bring out the best in men, our freedom may be our greatest liability.
September 11, 2001 was a wake up call for America. Jesus is offering America a cross – which is really a much lighter burden than anything America will have to bear if we decide to go forward without God. I implore each of us, please, to “pick up the cross Christ has for us.” For therein lays our ultimate freedom, safety and blessing. Back to Devotionals Page
