Under the guise of liberating young people, President Obama reduced their freedom by condemning all therapeutic efforts to alter one’s sexual identity. His administration went on record Wednesday night to ensure that all gay people in the USA have no clinical option but to embrace their homosexuality. The White House published its statement Wednesday evening in response to a WhiteHouse.gov petition that was originally posted in January.
The White House statement supporting efforts to ban sexual-orientation change therapies for minors “may be well intentioned but is misguided and misinformed,” said People Can Change, an international peer-support organization for men who seek to transition away from unwanted homosexuality.
“A ban on sexual-orientation change therapy for minors would take away a legitimate therapeutic option for minors who seek support in exploring alternatives to unwelcome sexual feelings,” said Rich Wyler, founder and director of the 15-year-old People Can Change organization. “It says to the minor, ‘Sorry, gay-affirming therapy is your only legal option.
“It is tragic that children who have been exposed to unwanted sexual advances or abuse by same-sex adults can no longer seek therapeutic help for resolving their sexual confusion,” says Anne Paulk, the director for The Restored Hope Network (www.restoredhopenetwork.com) a coalition of Christian ministries that offer hope for those hurting from sexual or relational brokenness, especially those impacted by homosexuality. “By withholding therapy to those in confusion we provoke suicidal ideation.”
“There is a growing intolerance of Christian sexual ethics. This may soon lead to a moratorium on giving therapeutic licenses to people with a biblical worldview,” explains Paulk.
Andrew Comiskey, an ex-gay himself is the board chairman who believes Obama’s position is not just ill-informed, it is dangerous. “Besides the presumption of a non-clinician making a blanket clinical judgment for our nation, he is ill-informed,” says Comiskey. “He draws upon no hard evidence but rather the agenda of activists who for years now have fired relentlessly at well-trained therapists who give their clients the freedom to resolve their gender identity issues through the therapeutic process.”
Comiskey says these are wise men and women who work only with the consent of persons to pursue the client’s goals, not the therapist’s. “Obama knows nothing about this. If he did, he could not, in good conscience, caricature reparative therapy as ‘dangerous and discredited,’ the scourge of ‘countless young people’ who have been driven to suicide by caring professionals. That is an unfounded charge that any reasonable person must decry as propaganda. It represents a closed door for persons who believe that their same-sex attraction or any kind of gender dissonance is a problem that they want to solve.”
“We must oppose any psychological determinism that declares persons are unalterably gay/transgender/bisexual, without the hope of choice,” explains Comiskey. “It is a closed universe, now presided over by the likes of Obama, under the pretense of human dignity and freedom. Perhaps he thinks he is opening up the future for a gender-confused generation. He is actually closing it. In refusing to consider valid options for persons who seek clinical assistance to change their sexual identity, he reduces the human freedom, the very freedom he seeks to defend by condemning reparative therapy.”
Paulk says, “It is unfair to ‘protect’ one person’s child while denying other children the help they desperately need. It is fundamentally unjust to deny youth the chance to resolve their unwanted feelings.”
