The most basic poetic device is the “Rhyme” and everyone here already seems very familiar with that! But I thought we would start with the basics and keep adding various poetic devices as we go!
Rhyme — a pattern of words that contains similar sounds
at the end of the line:
The dwarf, Henry
Roamed bold and free
Rhyme Scheme –a repeated pattern of rhymed words
at the end of the line
The dwarf, Henry (A)
Roamed bold and free (A)
With helm and packs (B)
And trusty axe. (B)
Obviously, this rhyming pattern can be changed. Here I will change it from A, A, B, B to A, B, A, B.
The dwarf, Henry (A)
With helm and packs (B)
Roamed bold and free (A)
With trusty axe. (B)
Another variation would be A, B, B, A
The dwarf, Henry (A)
With helm and packs (B)
And trusty axe, (B)
Roamed bold and free. (A)
If you find you always do an A, A, B, B poem, try changing your rhyme in your next poem to A, B, A, B, or even A, B, B, A.
