In the Struggle
When the Tempter paints a picture
That looks too good for words,
Speak a Word of scripture;
Let truth from you be heard.
Jesus said, “it is written”
And I take Him at his Word.
When the Tempter offers water
That tastes too sweet to pass,
Pray there to your Father:
“Give me wisdom Lord, I ask”
Jesus said: “I am the way”
And He is faithful to the task.
When the Tempter vies with lies
That sound too good to leave
Shun the devil’s ties
To scripture, you must cleave.
Jesus said: “I am the truth”
And your confident reprieve.
When the Tempter tests the flesh
That feels too strong to fight,
Flee at once and rest
In His promises and might.
Jesus said: “I am the life”
And can make your burdens light.
Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Remind Me, Lord
Should I in wealth and fame reside
And there no “needs” appear;
Remind me Lord, in Thee I hide
Abiding, keep me near.
Should I in comfort lose the view
Of Who it is Who reigns;
Remind me Lord, that it is you
And you, I must proclaim.
Should I in health and strength persist
To think that I’m sufficient;
Remind me Lord, that I’m a mist
While you remain omniscient.
When I in lean and wanting days
Forget how I adored Thee;
Remind me Lord, of countless ways
Your faithfulness restored me.
When I in pain and sickness cried
Desperate for reprieve;
Remind me Lord, you’re by my side
You’re He who never leaves.
When I near death, become remiss
and think of only flaws;
Remind me Lord, the chief is this
I’m hid with Christ in God.
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:3 NIV
Just When…
Just when it seems completely improbable,
In steps the God of the possible.
Just when it seems like the goal’s unattainable,
In steps the Lord, with grace unexplainable.
Just when our strength is well past its peak
In steps the Savior to carry the weak.
Just when all hope is just about gone,
In steps a King, bringing a song.
Just when a life is nearing it’s end
In steps eternity led by a Friend.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.
Love Covers
Have you faults today to share
Or pains you wish to drown?
Are there sins you cannot bear
Or burdens to lie down?
Will you take your cares to Jesus,
Where the Love of God can free us?
Have you words you can’t retract
Or addictions that have used you?
Is there bondage left intact
By the habits you are used to?
Will you take your cares to Jesus,
Where the love of God can free us?
Have you waywardness to straighten
Or a path to re-direct?
Are there convictions to awaken
Or His word to resurrect?
Will you take your cares to Jesus,
Where the love of God can free us?
Have you yet to taste and see
Or has fear and doubt prevailed?
Have you known of grace supreme
Or the cross where He was nailed?
Will you take your cares to Jesus,
Where the love of God can free us?
I Peter 4: 8 “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. NIV
Listen
The simple shall not hear Thee,
They are unaware you called.
They sought not to entreat Thee;
In their waywardness they fall.
The foolish shall not hear Thee,
Their complacency’s a void;
Muting words spoke from Thee
And without these are destroyed.
But for everyone who listens,
There is safety for all these.
In Christ, your future glistens;
In Him you are at ease.
Secure without the fear of harm
Is everyone whose heard.
We are sheltered in His arms
When we take Him at His word.
Proverbs 1: 32-33
“For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.” NIV
Persevering Prayer
Silent words, no ear would hear
Amidst the mocking and the jeers.
Silent prayers echoed near
a flow of sacred tears.
Some were wailing, others cheered.
Some drew close, some disappeared.
All impacted by the scene,
Of the dying Nazarene.
His greatest pain came not by blows
Nor were the nails His harshest foes.
The deepest wound He felt that day,
Was when his Father looked away.
While man was at his utmost worst,
A King forsaken, took our curse.
While all around their words reviled,
God hung praying, reconciling.
Psalm 109: 3, 4
”With words of hatred they surround me;
they attack me without cause.
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer.”
The God of the Possible
In Katrina’s deadly wake
and nothing left to claim…
Call to God, make no mistake
There’s healing in His name.
With God, all things are possible
Though everything’s displaced.
Know there’s nothing mightier
Than God’s Almighty grace.
He’s near the broken hearted.
He knows your every tear.
God has not departed,
He’s here and standing near.
With God, all things are possible!
His hand can reach to you.
For God can turn “impossible!”
Into everything made new.
Pray within your hurting heart
For Him to intercede.
His love and grace is standing by
To tend to every need.
Psalm 103: 2-5 “Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits- who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” NIV
What if Today?
What if today God speaks to you,
To make a special effort?
Because the days are fleeting, few
And time is of the essence.
Our lives are brief as vapor,
As transient as steam
So be sure to love your neighbor,
Be sure His love is seen.
What if today, the sudden news
Brings you to your knees?
Can your response somehow be used
To show another’s need?
Redeem the time, seize the hour,
Bid the Spirit’s leading!
God has ample love and power
To answer prayer’s pleading.
What if angels call you home?
Your time has finally come.
Did you “Seek ye first His kingdom?”
Will the Father say, “Well done!”
Seek His righteousness today,
Humbly seek His throne
That your life exalt Yahweh
and His glory for you known.
Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
One Thing
One Thing
If a single wish were granted me,
Lord, what would I ask?
If there were no restraints,
In what pleasure would I bask?
Would I ask for fame or fortune?
Would possessions bring me joy?
Is there something left to own
Or a service to employ?
Would I ask to live forever?
Would I ask for no more war?
How about perfected knowledge
Or for kingdoms by the score?
What can this world offer?
What to me would matter most?
If granted any wish on earth
In what then would I boast?
I’ve thought of every option,
Yet only one desire reigns.
One is my ambition:
Just one thing remains.
Lord, I would ask you for a towel,
To prepare for when we meet.
So when I have finished worshipping,
I could gently dry your feet.
Luke 7:38 “and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.” NIV
Christ, in it All
In all of life’s emotion,
In every trial or pain;
Turn to Christ again
In still devotion.
In all of life’s successes
And in the failures too,
There is a place for you
To sense His soft caresses.
In all of life’s confusion
With every tough decision,
His love dispels derision
And brings a “hope” transfusion.
In all of life’s declines,
In every fall that comes
There is a blessed One
Who carries us at times.
In all of life’s surrenders,
In every place you’ve failed
A Son for you prevails
and victory He renders.
John 3:35 “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.”
Glory Hands
It is moments such as these,
Surrounded by the beauty
That I pause to think of trees
And the glory that is due Thee.
Trees are firm examples
As their limbs extend like hands,
Every continent a sample
Of how to praise the great “I Am.”
Though tested by their climate,
They never cease to praise.
There hasn’t been a tree I met
That didn’t worship all its days.
Trees are born for seasons
Most bear leaves and others fruit,
But all display a reason
For praise from tip to root.
Take it from a tree,
He is worthy of all praise.
May saints be just as these,
Rejoicing all their days.
Psalms 96: 11,12 “Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy…” NIV
