The Gospel Music Association recently announced that New Zealand-based Parachute Band is the 2006 recipient of the organization’s International Award.
The International Award is given annually by the GMA to an individual, group or organization outside the U.S. who has impacted their own country and the Church at large. Previous International Award recipients include Darlene Zschech, Robin Mark, Matt Redman and Brian Doerksen.
Parachute Band was initially formed in 1996 as the “house band” for New Zealand’s annual Parachute Festival, a Christian music event that drew a record 25,000 this past January. The band (composed of Libby and Wayne Huirua, Rhys Machell and Julian Sylvester) tours internationally for four months each year. Six of the group’s CDs are certified gold in New Zealand and, they are winners of three “Best Gospel Album” awards from the New Zealand Music Awards. Their latest CD, “All The Earth,” is distributed in over 160 countries by Integrity Music.
Parachute Music is a Charitable Trust working in the New Zealand music industry to further Christian music in New Zealand and beyond in order to move people closer to Jesus Christ.
