Find everything Tolkien at Tolkien Town
In the film is this poignant line, “Nikabrik… lost hope. But, this young one (Lucy) hasn’t.”
Hope. More than just wishful thinking, “hope” is one of the three great identifiers of a Christian (“faith” and “love” being the other two.) Hope is at home in an optimist, but absent in a pessimist. Hope is being convinced, while others are confused. Hope realizes that the results will be good, even if the process is painful.
We don’t know very much about hope in our society. We know all about dread – which is hope’s opposite. Dread is convinced that things are bad and will only get worse. Many prominent Christian spokespersons stoke our natural inclination to dread. If you listen to or read them enough, you’ll be convinced to hunker down and just try to survive.
But, those who have hope know better. We know that God is in control. We know that persecution, resistance, failure, and frustration should be expected in a world that does not follow Him. We look to Heaven, not to the newspapers. While all those around us seem to be moving in the wrong direction, we know that God is not finished doing His job.
We have hope.
These Scriptures deal with the topic of hope.
* No one whose hope is in You will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. Psalm 25:3
* “…we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us…” Romans 5:3-5
* For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4
* And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. 1 Corinthians 12:13
* Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 2 Corinthians 3:12
