Mayberry publisher and poet, Kathryn E. Darden, will be the special guest at three book signings at Mayberry on Main (across from Snappy Lunch) during this year’s Mayberry Days in September. Appearing at noon on Thursday, September 27, Friday September 28, and Saturday, September 29, Darden will autograph copies of her book, The Mayberry Poem – A Tribute to Mayberry.
The Mayberry Poem – A Tribute to Mayberry is a compilation of poetry about “The Andy Griffith Show” that celebrates the characters and the show that made millions of viewers laugh during the turbulent 60s as they watched the antics and friendships of the good people of Mayberry. The slim volume of poetry released in April 2006 contains over 200 poems about Mayberry written by over 60 different poets from 20 states as well as Washington, D.C. Each poem pays tribute to a character, episode, or theme from “The Andy Griffith Show” or simply honors the fictional town of Mayberry itself with its small-town values and simple “good ole’ days” way of life. The poems range from humorous limericks to thought-provoking verses about the things that still make Mayberry resonate with viewers today.
A special limited edition version has been printed just in time for the 2007 book signings which will feature a picture of Mayberry on Main on the cover. The book also features a memorial section for Don Knotts, the beloved actor who portrayed Mayberry Deputy Barney Fife. Knotts passed away in February of 2006.
“The Mayberry poem book, A Tribute to Mayberry has sold out and been reordered more than once in our shop, Mayberry On Main,” says owner Debbie Miles. “It is a popular item and brings a smile to everyone’s faces and leaves an enjoyable thought in your mind.”
Kathryn E. Darden is not only the publisher and contributing poet of The Mayberry Poem – A Tribute to Mayberry, but she is also the publisher of Christian Activities Magazine which publishes an annual Mayberry issue distributed at Mayberry Days and other Mayberry festivals across the country. She also is Tribute Artist Flora Malherbe (Goober’s girlfriend in the color episodes).
“We hope everyone will stop by the shop and talk with Kathryn while they are in town,” states Darrell Miles of Mayberry On Main.
Mayberry on Main carries a wide assortment of Mayberry-related food and gift items. The store doubles as an ice cream parlor, and was the first store in the world to carry the new Mayberry’s Finest brand of packaged foods.
