Mayberry Days 2002 To Be Held September 26-28

Since its beginnings in 1990, the Surry Arts Council’s annual Mayberry Days has become one of the most anticipated events in the region.The 42nd anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show, recognized for its family-friendly traditional values, will be celebrated at this year’s festival, which takes place Sept. 26-28.

Harvey will be at Mayberry Days for the whole weekend, but the centerpiece of
his visit will be serving as very special guest for Neal Brower’s lecture on
Saturday afternoon.
Stars who plan to make appearances include Maggie Peterson/”Charlene Darling,” Howard Morris/”Ernest T,” Betty Lynn/”Thelma Lou,” Doug Dillard of the Darling Boys, and as well as George Spence, and James Best who all made guest appearances on The Andy Griffith Show. Harvey Bullock, one of the show’s best loved writers is also sceduled to attend. Dick Linke, the show’s associate producer and Andy Griffith’s personal manager for 25 years, and Jack Elinson, a writer of the show, may also be among the line up of special guests this year.

Held the last weekend each September, Mayberry Days attracts visitors from across the nation who come to sample a taste of “Mayberry” in Andy Griffith’s birthplace, Mount Airy, N.C. Each year, the three-day festival includes a golf tournament (Thursday afternoon), two concerts by The Doug Dillard Band (Friday afternoon and evening), Michael Hoover with “Memories of Elvis” and a Bluegrass concert by the VW Boys (Friday evening), the Mayberry Days Parade (Saturday morning) and “Colonel Tim’s Talent Time” (already sold out) and the Mayberry Days Country Revue and the Mayberry Days Pig Cookin’ Contest and Sale (Saturday afternoon). Other events are a Mayberry trivia contest, a pie-eating contest, “Mrs. Wiley’s Tea,” free walking tours and live Bluegrass music.

Many Mayberry Days lookalikes such as The Mayberry Deputy, Opie, Floyd, and Ernest T, will also be found at the festival, and this year Wally the Mayberry mechanic and Flora Malherbe (Goober’s girlfriend) will be found hanging out at Wallys!
