Five-time Grammy and 11-time Dove Award winner Larnelle
Harris will release a new limited edition CD entitled THE AMERICAN SPIRIT.
The CD features the new, self-penned title song, along with
previously-recorded patriotic tunes.
Harris wrote THE AMERICAN SPIRIT a few months ago, following the September 11
attacks. He has been performing the song live during his concerts, and the
demand for the song drove him to record it independently of a record label.
“We’ve had so many requests for this song that we wanted to get it into
people’s hands as soon as possible,” says Harris. “I know many songwriters
have put their feelings about September 11 into words and music, but I was
drawn to the aftermath of the events. The surge of patriotism, along with a
newfound and intense search for God in the midst of it all really motivated
this song.”
Harris was invited a few months ago to do a concert for the troops at Fort
Dix in New Jersey. Last month, Harris sang for the Army Chaplains’
conference, which included clergy from all religions who serve the armed
forces.
“I’ve had some great experiences in a span of over 25 years of being in the
music ministry,” says Harris. “I’ve encouraged and been encouraged by many.
And being with the Chaplains of our armed services was yet another encounter
that I’ll never forget. These are the people who help our fighting men and
women to achieve balance by affirming and nurturing their spirits. What an
honor it was to be in their presence.”
“Larnelle provided music which lifted our spirits and inspired us all,” says
Chaplain Larry Adams-Thompson, spokesman for the Army Chief of Chaplains.
“In light of the events of September 11, 2001, Larnelle touched each one of
us with a message of encouragement and healing.”
THE AMERICAN SPIRIT CD includes previously recorded songs by Harris,
including “Let Freedom Ring,” “Beginning With You,” “The Star Spangled
Banner,” “Statue Of Liberty,” and “Mighty Spirit,” a song that served as the
theme song for former President George Bush’s Points Of Light ad campaign.
“Mighty Spirit” was featured on the Points Of Light public service
announcements (PSA), which ran on television and radio stations across the
country, and subsequently became the longest-running PSA in the history of
television. Harris was awarded the Silver Bell Award for Distinguished
Public Service by the Ad Council for his involvement, and performed for
several White House events at the invitation of President George and Barbara
Bush.
Harris premiered THE AMERICAN SPIRIT on national television, March 25, on
FamilyNet’s flagship show, AT HOME LIVE. KCBI Radio in Dallas subsequently
did a premier of the song the same day.
On March 16, Harris performed in Washington D.C. for a Family Research
Council gathering. Organized in 1983, the Family Research Council champions
marriage and family as the foundation of civilization, shaping public debate
and formulating public policy that values human life and upholds the
institutions of marriage and family. Current Family Research Council
president Kenneth Conner, succeeded Gary Bauer, who resigned to run for
President of the United States in 2000.
THE AMERICAN SPIRIT will be available for sale through Harris’ website atwww.larnelle.com. Retailers can order the CD by calling toll free
