Kurt Carr has been called “one of the best-kept secrets in Gospel,” but the word is out now. The Gospo Centric Records recording artist received 5 Stellar Awards at the 17th Annual Stellar Awards ceremony, held at Atlanta’s Civic Center this past Saturday. Carr received awards for Producer of the Year and Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year, and shared the honors with The Kurt Carr Singers for Group or Duo of the Year, Contemporary Group/Duo of the Year and Contemporary CD of the Year (for Awesome Wonder).
Carr, who received a record 9 nominations for this year’s awards, performed his Song of the Year-nominated “In the Sanctuary” on the Stellar Awards along with The Kurt Carr Singers.
“Gospo Centric is thrilled that the world is finally discovering the amazing gifts of Kurt Carr as a writer, producer, performer, and anointed man of God,” comments Gospo Centric V.P. of Marketing Gabriel Aviles. “This is yet another milestone in Kurt Carr’s amazing year on the way to his first gold record!”
The awards cap off a stellar year for Kurt Carr & The Kurt Carr Singers. Their latest CD is Awesome Wonder on Gospo Centric Records, which peaked at #5 for 3 weeks on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, and has remained in the Top 10 on that chart for 71 weeks since its release in September 2000. The album, Carr’s fastest-selling project to date, is quickly approaching Gold status.
In 2001, Carr received a Dove Award nomination for Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year and gave an outstanding performance at the 2001 Dove Awards show at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN. He also received a total of 6 GMWA nominations from The Gospel Music Workshop of America and went home with 4 GMWA awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year (Urban Contemporary), Group of the Year (Contemporary), Producer of the Year (Contemporary) and Album of the Year (Contemporary).
The 17th Annual Stellar Awards, produced by Central City Productions, will be broadcast in syndication from Jan. 12-Feb. 10, 2002. Check local listings for broadcast times and channels in specific markets.
Awesome Wonder is distributed by BMG Distribution via Zomba and by Provident Music Distribution.
Other winners include Shirley Ceasar who accepted her 13th Stellar Award on the televised show, declaring her the Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year for her current album Hymns. Ceasar proved to be worthy of her recognition that night with a live performance of “Steal Away to Jesus” with Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child.
