Imagine my surprise when Google Alerts delivered ten alerts to my inbox on Wednesday informing me that Kathryn Darden had just married Boston Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz on May 16! To top it off, I discovered I was the mother of two children from a former marriage and had just inherited four more by wedding John Smoltz! Then I began to get messages and emails inquiring about my newfound matrimonial state, as well as numerous visits and pingbacks to my blogs.
The result of this flurry of excitement is I am suddenly paying attention to a baseball player I wasn’t aware of before, and I have discovered John Smoltz is an interesting person.
Pitcher John Smoltz is a Christian and a member of the Presbyterian Church in America. Smoltz is Chairman of the Board at King’s Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta and is also involved in the development of a new Christian school in the metropolitan Atlanta area. His John Smoltz Foundation supports several charitable endeavors in Atlanta.
Smoltz was with the Atlanta Braves for more than two decades where among other honors, he won the Cy Young Award in 1996. Smoltz signed a one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox in January of this year.
On Saturday, May 16, John Smoltz married the “other” Kathryn Darden at Smoltz’s Alpharetta, GA. Smoltz was married for 16 years to wife Dyan before they divorced in 2007.
