Karen Handel, former vice president of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, recently spoke at the “The Planned Parenthood Shakedown of Komen for the Cure” lecture in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 13, 2012. Handel has written a book about the way Planned Parenthood bullied the organization after Komen cut funding to the abortion provider.
Handel resigned from her position with Komen in February 2012 following the spectacle that Planned Parenthood and their followers caused in January which led to Komen reversing its decision and announcing it was restoring funding to the abortion seller. Her book, “Planned Bullyhood: The Truth Behind the Headlines about the Planned Parenthood Funding Battle with Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” was released in September.
In her book Handel describes threats from corporate donors and from Congress as Planned Parenthood’s media cronies rushed to tell one side of the story. Within a short 72 hours Planned Parenthood was getting money from the Komen foundation again, even though the breast cancer charity wanted to remove themselves from the pro-life/abortion debate by severing ties with Planned Parenthood.
Komen had made the decision to directly fund centers that provide mammograms for women, without going through a middle-man organizations like Planned Parenthood which offers breast exams but refers clients elsewhere for mammograms.
After Komen announced they were no longer going to fun Planned Parenthood, Komen “was the subject of an unprecedented, premeditated, mafia-style assault all because Susan G. Komen for the Cure tried to do what was in the best interest its mission in the fight against breast cancer,” Handel told a Family Research Policy lecture webcast in Washington D.C. titled “The Planned Parenthood Shakedown of Komen for the Cure.”
