Joy Williams to Release Sophomore Project

On the heels of one of the most successful years for a new artist, Reunion recording artist, Joy Williams prepares to release her sophomore project, “By Surprise,” to retail on October 8, 2002.
Working with GRAMMY and Dove Award winning producer Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, Avalon), Joy has evolved into an artist in every sense of the word. Her growth both as a vocalist and songwriter is apparent in the content on “By Surprise.” With over half the songs on the album penned by Williams, Joy has her fingerprints all over this album both creatively and lyrically.
“When you sign an artist like Joy Williams at such a young age – Joy was signed at the age of 17 – you don’t always know what kind of artist will emerge. Watching Joy grow, mature and ‘spread her wings’ artistically throughout the process of making this album has been one of the most satisfying times of my career.” notes Dean Diehl, general manager/Reunion Records. “I give Brown Bannister a lot of the credit for finding the ‘artist’ within Joy and nurturing her through this growth process.”
Encompassing the changes in Joy’s life, “By Surprise” talks about giving God the every day ordinaries and watching Him make them extraordinary, allowing Him to infiltrate every moment of life. Much of the album contains songs about surrender, obedience and the question “why” but in the hope-filled, joyful sound from the heart of Joy.
With less programmed drums and more acoustic guitar, the new album moves away from the “dance-pop” sound of her self-titled debut, creating more of a “live band” feel, reminiscent of the sounds of Sheryl Crow or Nelly Furtado.
This fall Joy will be a part of the Girls of Grace conference, which will hit Orlando, FL; Dallas, TX; Grand Rapids, MI and Denver, CO. The Girls of Grace tour is an opportunity for Joy in the sense of ministering to young girls and helping them become a daughter of Christ and striving to be more in Him. While out on the Girls of Grace tour, Joy will be busy with extensive media, radio and retail events. Joy will also kick off her promotional tour on October 7 in Chicago, IL with several media events and a brown bag concert with WONU in Bourbonnais, IL. Joy will also hit other key cities, such as Tulsa, OK; Colorado Springs, CO; Los Angeles, CA and Houston, TX, among others.
On the retail front, Reunion Records plans to secure catalog advertising in fall pieces for all major chains and regional stores, while Joy will be featured on Provident Music Distribution’s “Above The Groove” promotion alongside other popular Provident Music Group artists beginning in August and running through December. Merchandising opportunities include a joint endcap kit with label-mate LaRue, consisting of headers, flats and shelftalkers. By Surprise will have a special price of $9.99 ($13.99 with a $4 off coupon at the time of purchase), premium endcap placement in Family Christian with more than 300 stores nationwide and over 100 LifeWay Christian Bookstores.
“Marketing Joy’s record is very natural for us, just because of who she is.” notes Keri Turner, sr. director of marketing. “Joy connects on so many different levels with fans and gatekeepers, so our goal is to network her with as many of them as possible through an extensive promotional tour and fall tour dates, including the Girls of Grace stops.”
Joy released her debut album in July 2001 and recorded the album while still attending high school. Since signing with Reunion Joy has been a part of “The Left Behind” Tour, label-mate NewSong’s Summer and Winter Jam Tour and both the spring and fall legs of the Avalon “Oxygen” tour
This past year Joy was a New Artist of the Year Dove Award Nominee. Joy also presented and performed at the 10th Annual MOVIEGUIDE Awards in Los Angeles back in March.
