Holy Wednesday: The Impending Death

~ Holy Wednesday: The Impending Death of Jesus ~

Holy Wednesday is represented as the day it was recognized by some that Jesus must die.

At a dinner a week before, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, breaks open a valuable bottle of perfume (worth about 300 pieces of silver) and pours it over Jesus’s feet to honor Him. This represents His value to her and is like a foreshadowing of embalming.

Judas on the other hand, becomes angry and sees this as wasteful, money that could have been contributed to the coffers of the disciple. His response to Jesus is to betray him, for 30 pieces of silver – 1/10 the value of the perfume! Jesus’s response, in the Scripture below does not negate the poor but rather was reminder that His days with them were numbered!

You will always have the poor among you,[a] but you will not always have me.”

John 12:8 NIV
