Heavy Hits: December

Radio station Positive 89.3, Portland, ME, granted a Christmas Wish for a family in Australia, whose two young children suffer from Batten’s Disease, a rare genetic disorder which has no cure and is always fatal. The Holder family was surprised by a phone call telling them that over $6,000 US Dollars ($8,200 Australian) was raised to help offset the cost of their families travel to New York, where they will be going in January for treatments. “I’m shocked, it’s amazing you would do something like that”, said Mr. Holder, the recipient. “I had a good impression of Americans, this only makes it better.” The Holder family also received a “Living Photo Album” and Digital Camera so they can keep the memories of their children alive. Their two children, Seth, five (5), and McKenzie, three (3), were both diagnosed with Batten’s disease, a disease that will eventually leave the children, blind, bed ridden and unable to function. The disease is always fatal between the ages of eight (8) and twelve (12). Family friend, Tony Krome, wrote the Christmas Wish letter to Positive 89.3 hoping to brighten the Holder’s Holiday. “The Holder family will be so touched when they find out,” said Tony when he was told his Christmas wish would be granted. In all, nine (9) Christmas Wishes were granted ranging from providing needy families with food and gifts, to heating oil and warm clothes for the winter, to a scholarship in memory of a seventeen (17) year old girl, Shantelle, who passed away on November 9, 2005 after a long battle with cancer. Positive 89.3 staff also delivered Christmas gifts to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center on Wednesday, December 21st, in memory of Shantelle, who had spent time there battling her disease.
