The accolades for singer/songwriter Greg Sczebel keep coming in as he takes home one of Canada’s most recognized awards. On October 23, 2005, Sczebel’s Juno award winning debut album “Here to Stay” received the Western Canadian Music Award (WCMA) for “Outstanding Christian Recording of the Year”. This year the WCMAs were held in Vancouver, BC, at the legendary Commodore Ballroom, celebrating the best of Western Canadian Music. Shortly after receiving his award Sczebel took to the stage with 7-piece funk/jazz group, Moses Mayes (of Winnipeg) and rapper Kia Kidiri (of Victoria) in a high-energy medley of the artists’ material. The evening’s list of winners included Diana Krall, Nathan, The Waking Eyes and Sarah McLachlan, to name a few.
But the winning didn’t stop there for this talented artist. On the previous evening he picked up the award for “Urban Song of the Year” for “Everybody” at this year’s Covenant Awards held in Toronto, ON. He was nominated for a total of 4 Covenant awards for the second consecutive year. In 2004 he won 2 of the 4 nominations for “Male Vocalist of the Year” and “Rap/Hip Hop/Dance Song of the Year” for the hit single “Lights Are Comin’ On”. Fans from across Canada and the U.S. continue to follow his music because of its mature depth and innovative sound. But this neo-soul artist just takes everything in stride and is humble about his achievements, “Every time this album has received a nomination or award it’s been just as unexpected as the time before.” Said Sczebel, “I never dreamed it would accomplish this much back when it was being written and recorded. Without the hard work and support of an endless list of people, this could never have been achieved. I’m honored to share these successes with them.”
As he continues to share his music, Sczebel is set to embark on an Alberta/Northern BC tour in the next few weeks, but before that he had one more performance close to home. On October 26, 2005 he took part in the Kelowna Global Citizen Week, performing at the One World Music event along with bands Freeflow and Earthbound.
