The third day of GMA Week found me driving past a huge poster of Amy Grant on my way into downtown and then circling Nashville in a vain search for a parking place in time to make it to the McCain and Company suite for my 11:00 interview with Ileana Garces. Finally a likely spot presented itself and I sprinted to the Renaissance Hotel and made it almost on time.
I found Ileana relaxing in the suite and was able to spend an enjoyable 45 minutes learning all about the new Latin artist from Miami who at 22 is working on her sophomore release. Besides being a talented artist, Ileana comes from an unconventional family which has given her a quirky sense of humor… such as telling the unsuspecting journalist about her fictitious experiences in jail! Between such humor highlights Ileana poured out the heart God has given her to minister to hurting women and her zeal to take a stand for Christ. “If I don’t stand for anything, I can fall for anything,” she told me.

While Ileana was embellishing her “criminal” past, Freddie was waiting for me in a nearby room with his drummer, Benjamin, so I left Ileana snickering about her next evil joke while I hurried to meet Freddie. Freddie was low-key and yet passionate about his music and his ministry. Growing up in a Christian home, Freddie made several decisions growing up to follow Christ and later to serve Him more. “I am not satisfied with that,” he shared. “I want to get closer to God.” He is also dissatisfied with the media hype that often compares him with Ricky Martin. “There are similarities in our music but not our message,” he says adadmantly.

Leaving Freddie I walked into the main room of the suite where Paula and Mike Parker were interviewing Sarah Hart. We exchanged pleasantries before I headed down into the lobby area. There I found a cornucopia of the talented and the famous as well as the hopeful and the business-types rubbing elbows and making contacts. The boys from Buck were back guarding their corner, and John Schlitt strolled by for a hug and a greeting. We talked briefly about the negative trends in television. “I am encouraged by shows like ‘7th Heaven’ and ‘Touched by an Angel,'” he told me.

Geoff Moore also had the media on his mind and we got to talking about what a great encourager Sheriff Andy Taylor was to Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show.”

After chatting with Geoff, I headed down to the Convention Center to check out the exhibits on the bright red carpet.

Kim Hill stopped by and caught me up on current developments in her career. She is working on a project she has recently done for her own children called, “Hope No Matter What” as well as leading worship at the “Every Woman’s Hope” conferences around the country.
You never know who you will see or what you will talk about at GMA Week, but it is never dull. Speaking of which, as I type this report from the media room at the Renaissance Hotel, Kim Hill has just walked in! Like I said, you never know who you will see!
