Former Psychic Medium Jenn Nizza Warns New Age Practices Are Infiltrating the Church

Former professional psychic medium Jenn Nizza is sounding an urgent alarm that New Age practices such as tarot, astrology, and mediumship are no longer confined to occult circles but are increasingly influencing Christian culture and targeting young people. In her new book Darkness in Disguise: A Biblical Warning About Spiritual Deception in Our Culture, the Long Island author shares her firsthand journey from working as a psychic in New York to finding freedom in Christ, while cautioning believers against spiritual deception.

A Personal Journey from the Occult to Faith

Nizza received her first tarot reading as a child in her mother’s basement beauty shop and within a decade was working as a psychic medium. Each of the twelve chapters in Darkness in Disguise opens with a real-life scene from her years in the New Age before pointing readers to Scriptures that warn against such practices. She describes client sessions and an escalating series of encounters with what she identifies as demonic spirits that left her afraid to be alone in her own home.

“A darkness had settled into my soul that I didn’t understand,” Nizza says. “I began to see evil spirits manifested in my home — standing over me — and it scared me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I had made myself a slave of the devil.”

The turning point came after a late-night drive home from a reading. After another demonic encounter that nearly caused her to wreck her car, she called out to Jesus for the first time.

“I came face to face with my own death,” she writes. “In that moment I had no hope, only fear. And from the depths of that fear, Jesus’ name came to my lips. In my moment of despair, I called His name and not the name of my spirit guides.”

New Age Influence on Youth and Culture

Nizza notes that tarot, astrology, and mediumship now draw large audiences on social media, often aimed at young women. She also warns that these practices appear in books, movies, and television shows that target children.

“When I look at online videos of young girls giving readings or participating in all sorts of New Age practices, I wonder how many of them are truly suffering in the shadows,” she says. “They might be struggling with OCD or depression or debilitating anxiety, but they cover it up. Like a character out of Harry Potter, they seek meaning in the world of magic.”

A Warning to the Church

Nizza is particularly concerned about Christians adopting New Age language and ideas. She cautions against phrases such as “Manifest your own reality” or “The power of healing is within you,” and against practices like astrology.

“I’m often saddened by how many Christians use terminology from the New Age and engage in practices such as astrology,” she says. “When confronted about it, they frequently shrug their shoulders and dismiss it as an area of Christian liberty. Christians don’t have any license to believe false teaching and engage in practices God has forbidden in His Word.”

She emphasizes that biblical teaching and New Age beliefs cannot coexist. “New Age beliefs disregard God’s power and control in our lives and put that power in our own hands. That’s a recipe for disaster. The choice is clear—we are either children of God or children of the devil.”
