Word for the Day: Fight with the Sword of the Spirit

~ Fighting the enemy with the Sword of the Spirit ~

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God,so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6: 19-17, NIV

The Sword of the Spirit

We read about the full armor of God in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, chapter 6. This armor includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with readiness, the shield of faith, and the helmet of salvation. These are all designed to defend and protect the wearer. But that’s not all the apostle Paul includes.

The Sword of the Spirit

17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6 NIV

The last item mentioned is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. This is the offensive equipment—the weapon. This is how we strike at the enemy.

Even the Son of God used scripture to defeat the enemy. He could have called down the forces of heaven when he stood against Satan in the wilderness, but his weapon of choice was scripture.

An estimated 1/10 of the words of Jesus recorded in scripture in the New Testament quotes from the Old Testament. Jesus quoted scripture somewhere around 100 times.

Do you want to know how to defeat Satan? Quote scripture when you are tempted, oppressed or beseiged. Want to know more scripture? Read the Bible. Then protect yourself with the defensive equipment and take up the sword of the spirit which is the Word of God to fight.
