Facebook shut down the Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day page launched by former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee for 12 hours on Tuesday, July 24. The page closure was puzzling since Huckabee’s page was clear in its statements that those who share traditional family and/or Christian beliefs were not being called upon to do anything but show support for the popular restaurant chain by eating there on Aug. 1.
Visiting the site several times yesterday showed many posts in support of Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day with a few people coming in to cast the usual hate-mongering slurs about Christians being intolerant. Over 77,000 people had liked the page by Tuesday afternoon, showing wide-spread support for Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.
The many posts I read by those who plan to support Chick-fil-A had nothing negative to say about those in opposition. Most were variations on the two themes: “I love Chick-fil-A” and “Thank you Mike Huckabee for starting this page.”
However, in a couple of threads where Christians were insulted for their beliefs, some brave souls did post polite rebuttals and a couple had the audacity to use Biblical references. If it went downhill from there, I didn’t see it.
Out of the hundreds of posts and comments I took the time to read yesterday, the tone was positive and upbeat from the supporters of Chick-fil-A. However, negative, even malicious comments spewed forth from the few malcontents coming in to try to disrupt the support generated for Chick-fil-A, demonstrating that those who clamor the loudest demanding tolerance for their lifestyle choices often don’t know how to give it.
Then the Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day page mysteriously disappeared. In response to the Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day page being taken down by Facebook, a new page was temporarily put up: the Bring Back the “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” Page at https://www.facebook.com/events/list#!/pages/Bring-Back-the-Chick-fil-A-…
Twelve hours later, the original page was back up at Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. with already 99,853 participants and climbing planning to support Chick-fil-A.
