Enchanted April, the Academy Award-nominated film which was released in 1992, makes its DVD debut on May 5, 2009 from Miramax Films. Stars Josie Lawrence (“Eastenders”), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Joan Plowright (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Polly Walker (“Cane”), Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2), and Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent (Best Supporting Actor, Iris, 2001), this charming romantic movie should appeal to fans of movies such as “A Walk in the Clouds,” and “A Room with a View.”
Enchanted April is the story of two proper but desperately unhappy Englishwomen, Mrs Wilkins (Josie Lawrence) and Mrs. Arbuthnot (Miranda Richardson), who decide to escape the dreariness and dampness of their lives in London by renting a castle in the Italian countryside for one month. Because of the expenses involved, the two women advertise for two more women to join them to split expenses.
Four women with very little in common end up at San Salvatore, a secluded coastal castle in Italy. Mrs Arbuthnot and Mrs Wilkins belong to the same ladies’ club but have never spoken. They discover they both share unhappy marriages. Elderly widow Mrs Fisher (Joan Plowright) and the beautiful but troubled Lady Caroline Dester (Polly Walker) answer their ad, and the four women come together at the castle with little in common but the need for healing and change in their lives. The mismatched housemates find that the beautiful villa and lush Italian setting hold a special magic. Soon friendships are formed as the women reach out to each other and begin to heal and move forward with their lives.
Enchanted April was an international hit seventeen years ago and the film earned three 1992 Oscar nominations including Best Supporting Actress for Plowright. In addition, the Enchanted April two Golden Globes, one for Richardson (Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical) and one for Plowright (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role) and was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. >

Enchanted April is gorgeously photographed and superbly acted, and is a relaxing movie. If you are looking for action or a lot of laughs, you won’t find it here, but if you enjoy a romantic movie with subtle comedy and a gentle pace, Enchanted April will put a smile on your face.
