Dr. George Washington Carver

Born to a slave couple during the Civil War and orphaned as a baby, Carver paid for his college education by selling his own paintings. The Iowa State graduate and Tuskegee professor, who revolutionized the economy of America’s south, is one of the most inspiring men of faith and science. Turning down offers to work for Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, Dr. Carver said: “God is going to reveal to us
things He never revealed before if we put our hands in His.”
While speaking to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee in 1921 on uses of the peanut, Dr. Carver was asked how he learned all this. “From an old book,” he replied. Asked what book, he added, “The Bible.” When the chairman inquired if
the Bible tells about peanuts, Dr. Carver explained: “No, sir, but it tells about the God who made the peanut. I asked Him to show me what to do with it,
and He did.”
“Only alone can I draw close enough to God to discover His secrets,” wrote Dr.
Carver — secrets including:
– 300 uses for peanuts, 11 for the sweet potato and dozens for the soybean.
– Nine medicines, including quinine for malaria and a drug for goiter treatment.
– More than 20 cosmetic items, more than 12 animal feeds and fertilizers.
– Dozens of dyes, paints, and stains.
– Synthetic cotton, synthetic plastics and synthetic rubber, which proved to be a great development during World War II.
Dr. Carver once said, “I never have to grope for methods. The method is revealed at the moment I am inspired to create something new. … Without God to draw aside the curtain, I would be helpless.”
In “George Washington Carver: His Life & Faith in His Own Words,” a biography by William J. Federer, Dr. Carver’s deep faith is shared in his letters to close friends. Almost every one of his letters praise God. His story provides an eye-opening look at what God can
do with anyone willing to seek His face. To learn more from a remarkable American devoted to honoring God about how God can and will
