Centricity recording artist Downhere is one of the top nominees at GMA Canada’s 28th Annual Covenant Awards, it was recently announced. The Canadian melodic alt-rockers have received six Covenant Award nominations, including the prestigious Artist of the Year and Group of the Year honors. Downhere’s critically-acclaimed 2006 release, Wide-Eyed And Mystified, has also received nominations in both the Album of the Year and Rock Album of the Year categories.
In addition, Downhere’s current CHR single, “The More,” written by the band’s Marc Martel and Jason Germain, was nominated for Rock Song of the Year, while the group’s latest Christian AC single, “A Better Way,” also written by Martel and Germain, has been nominated for a Covenant Award for Recorded Song of the Year.
The 28th Annual Covenant Awards will be held October 27 at Centre Street Church in Calgary, Alberta, in conjunction with the Canada Christian Music Conference. The annual Covenant Awards are recognized as Canada’s longest-standing Christian music awards.
Downhere’s Centricity Records debut, Wide-Eyed And Mystified, released May 23 to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by Mark Heimermann (Michael W. Smith, dcTalk), Greg Collins (U2, Gwen Stefani) and Downhere, the album features 13 tracks, all written by the band. Downhere is currently featured on BarlowGirl’s 30-city “The Don’t Conform” Tour, along with Matthew West.
Hitting the U.S. music scene in 2001 with the release of their self-titled debut, Downhere was nominated for a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year, and the group received a Juno Award (Canada) for Best Gospel Album, as well as GMA Canada Covenant Awards for Rock Album of the Year and Rock Song of the Year for “Larger Than Life.” The band’s follow-up, So Much For Substitutes, released in 2003, earning Downhere a Dove Award for Modern Rock Recorded Song of the Year for “Breaking Me Down.”
