Dove Award Nominees Announced

A tremendous wealth of diversity and new talent in Contemporary Christian and
Gospel Music was once again on display as nominations were announced today
for the 32nd Annual Dove Awards, with Third Day and Mac Powell, Fred Hammond,
P.O.D., Mary Mary and Michael W. Smith garnering the most nominations.
Word Records’ Point of Grace, who is nominated for Group of the Year, joined
Gospel Music Association President Frank Breeden and dick clark productions’
R.A. Clark at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville to announce the nominations.
Third Day lead singer Mac Powell leads the field of nominees with nine total
nominations, sharing seven of those nominations with his band. Fred Hammond
follows with eight nominations for his work as the principal of Fred Hammond &
Radical for Christ and his songwriting and production efforts. P.O.D., Mary
Mary and Michael W. Smith each earn seven nominations. Steven Curtis Chapman
and Mark Schultz have six nods each.
“The best story in Christian music in 2000 was the unprecedented success our
industry saw in breaking new talent. The nominations for this year’s New
Artist of the Year category reflect artists who achieved the highest sales
for a class of debut albums in our industry’s history. Our industry’s
maturity is also displayed as these accomplishments occurred across a wide
spectrum of musical styles,” said Breeden.
“This diversity of talent is further demonstrated in the Group of the Year,
where you have P.O.D., a hard core rock band, nominated alongside Point of
Grace, one of our industry’s most successful Adult contemporary pop groups.
They are joined by another popular AC vocal group Avalon, David Foster’s new
boy band Plus One and rootsy rockers Third Day. Most of the other categories
reveal similar range,” added Breeden.
New artists also fared well with nominations. The five new artist nominees
all scored multiple nominations: Rachael Lampa (4), Mary Mary (7), Stacie
Orrico (4), Plus One (4) and Mark Schultz (6). “I’m glad that the voting
membership of GMA has bestowed an unprecedented number of nominations on our
new artists commensurate with their collective album sales success in the
marketplace. Much of our nine percent increase in mainstream marketplace
sales during 2000 can be attributed to this group of new artist nominees,”
Breeden commented.
Other artists receiving multiple nods are Donnie McClurkin with five and
Yolanda Adams, Jaci Velasquez, Martin Smith of Delirious, Nicole C. Mullen,
Fernando Ortega and Brent Bourgeois with four a piece.
Artist of the Year nominations went to Steven Curtis Chapman, P.O.D., Michael
W. Smith, Third Day and Jaci Velasquez. Nominated for Female vocalist are
Yolanda Adams, Rachael Lampa, Nicole C. Mullen, Nichole Nordeman and Jaci
Velasquez. Male vocalist nominees include Steven Curtis Chapman, Fernando
Ortega, Mac Powell, Mark Schultz and Michael W. Smith.
Dove Awards nominations go to recordings released during the Eligibility Year
November 1, 1999 through October 31, 2000 and voted on by the 5,000 member
Gospel Music Association.
The 32nd Annual Dove Awards will be produced by dick clark productions, inc.
