At the Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards, the bluegrass music industry’s highest honors each year go to the new members inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees are The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, and Mayberry’s own Darling boys – The Dillards.
While to bluegrass fans and music aficionados the Dillards are known for helping start Southern California’s country rock movement in the late 60s, to fans of classic television, the Dillards will forever be known as Mayberry’s Darling boys, part of a mountain family of bluegrass playing hillbillies led by veteran actor Denver Pyle as Briscoe Darling, who played the Darling family patriarch and jug player. Maggie Peterson Mancuso played Charlene Darling, the Darlings’ cute sister who danced and sang with the boys and who had eyes for Sheriff Taylor.
Although Mitch Jayne had to stop performing with the Dillards a few years back due to hearing loss, he will once again get back on the truck with Doug Dillard, Rodney Dillard, and Dean Webb, when they are inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
