The Lipscomb University Business Leadership Council presents its spring breakfast on Tuesday, March 28, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. in Allen Arena, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville. Dr. David Sampson, deputy secretary of the U.S. Commerce Department, is the featured speaker.
David A. Sampson was appointed deputy secretary of the U.S. Commerce Department by President George W. Bush on April 1, 2005. A 1978 graduate of Lipscomb University, Sampson was also designated by President Bush as a member of the Board of Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Previously, he served as assistant secretary of commerce for economic development and head of the Economic Development Administration, which issues federal grants to help revitalize distressed communities. As deptury secretary, Sampson serves as the department’s chief operating officer, with responsibility for the day-to-day management of its approximately $6.5 billion budget, 13 operating unites and 38,000 employees. In that capacity, he is also a memeber of the President’s Management Council. The department’s missions include promoting U.S. exports, negotiating and enforcing international trade agreements and regulating sensitive goods and technologies exports.
Prior to joining the Bush Administration in August 2001, Sampson worked in both the private and public sectors, serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Arlington, Texas Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Texas Council on Workforce and Economic Competitiveness; and Vice Chair of the Texas Strategic Economic Development Planning Commission in then-Governor Bush’s Administration. Sampson earned his doctorate at Abilene Christian University. He and his family currently reside in Northern Virginia.
