D. L. Moody Center’s 3rd Annual ‘Go Dark, Shine Bright’
Launching on May 1, 2023, powerful initiative aims to reignite the Church and reach over 250,000 with the Gospel
The D. L. Moody Center (moodycenter.org) is eagerly anticipating their third annual “Go Dark, Shine Bright” campaign. The initiative, which kicks off on Monday, May 1, encourages participants to foster personal spiritual renewal through a five-day pause from social media, followed by a challenge to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. To encourage participants to make the most of the fast, the D. L. Moody Center provides helpful resources to walk through the challenge of unplugging from social media. Based on the success of the 2021 and 2022 campaign, the D. L. Moody Center anticipates more than 20,000 participants this year, resulting in 70,000 participants over the last three years and the Gospel being shared with over 250,000 people.
The D. L. Moody Center, one of the nation’s top spiritual renewal organizations, has become a vanguard in addressing the unique challenges of living for Christ in a digital age. Studies continue to confirm what many ministry leaders have long understood: social platforms can have a corrosive effect on their users.
James Spencer, president of D. L. Moody Center, noted that excessive online engagement can distract Christians from true community and their calling.
“Social media can have a positive place in our world,” Spencer stated. “At the same time, these platforms are designed to maximize user engagement, which means we are lured to spend countless hours scrolling through countless posts. As a result, we become less engaged in spending time with God and less effective in sharing his truth with a world in need.”
Spencer continued, “The ‘Go Dark, Shine Bright’ initiative was designed with a singular goal: to turn down the digital noise in our lives and encourage a renewed focus on Christ and the Gospel.”
First launched in 2021, the campaign was inspired by a quote from acclaimed evangelist and center founder D. L. Moody, who once said, “In the place God has put us, He expects us to shine, to be living witnesses, to be a bright and shining light. While we are here our work is to shine for Him.”
Following the 2021 initiative, the D. L. Moody Center received a flood of positive feedback from participants, such as one who shared, “Thank you so much for being faithful to encourage others in the word of God, that we all may continue to fight the good fight and advance the Kingdom of God.”
Another participant simply stated, “I am not missing Facebook. It is less stressful without it.”
As one previous participant enthused, “Thank you for spurring us to Go Dark so we could see what we were missing. And now to Shine Bright!”
“Go Dark, Shine Bright” strongly aligns with Spencer’s latest book, “Christian Resistance: Learning to Defy the World and Follow Christ.” The book helps identify crucial methods to avoid tempting distractions found online and focus on the Gospel. Each chapter encourages readers to think and act so they not only understand the concepts addressed but experience God as they adopt new patterns of life that recognize God’s active presence in the world.
