Concerned Women for America (CWA) responded to the fact that today, for the first time, the United States released official Census Bureau data analyzing the links between marriage and socioeconomic characteristics. The official data confirms other reports that a higher median age of first marriage is associated with higher proportions of unmarried-couple households and lower proportions of married-couple households.
Dr. Janice Crouse, who has analyzed Census Bureau reports for six years in publications for Concerned Women for America’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, said, “The detailed breakdown of data for various states is a powerful tool for those of us who are concerned about strengthening the traditional family in America.”
Crouse added, “We have known that marriage substitutes have a strong negative impact on socioeconomic factors; that without marriage, women and children suffer. Now, the Census Bureau has analyzed its own data and provided its own evidence for those findings.”
Specifically, the Bureau’s analysis indicates that the Northeast has some of the highest rates of unmarried-couple households, while Southern states have the lowest. Sadly, nearly 30 percent of new mothers were unmarried and one in two unmarried mothers who had recently given birth were living below the poverty level (four times higher than married couples).
Concerned Women for America (CWA) is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.
