Consumers vs. Communers

“In the long run, if we train people to be consumers instead of communers,
we’ll end up with customers instead of disciples. It might fill up an
auditorium, but it’ll never turn the world upside down for Christ.” — Greg
Laurie, The Upside Down Church
We live in a town that produces all kinds of Christian “products.” There’s
the Christian music industry, Bible publishing, Christian books, Sunday
school materials, and the marketing of all sorts of trinkets embossed with
the cross. Some of these things are useful but some of them make many of us
wince. Where we have the opportunity to influence these industries, let’s do
all we can to raise the standards and refocus the goals.
Along the way, we would do well to guard the precious jewel of faith in our
own hearts so that a counterfeit never supplants the real. We must humble
ourselves before the Lord, express true heartfelt devotion to Him through the
spiritual disciplines, and pray that the Holy Spirit would search our hearts
to root out all cynicism or arrogance. And then, let’s do all we can to
encourage that authenticity in each other.
