It was a cold, bleak day as I waited for my son at the Inter-School cycle racing venue. These keen teenagers,
dressed in spotless, multi-coloured clothing, bikes gleaming, seemed to have one topic of conversation – the latest
and best in cycles and gear!
This particular day, just as the main group set off, it started to rain. All the waiting parents groaned, for we knew what
to expect at the finish of the race!
The route they took, was along a back country road and past a dairy farm. Twice daily, the farmer drove his cows
along the road between the pastures and cowshed. The proof of this daily move was very evident on the road!
At the end of this race, no-one was recognisable, for the riders and their bikes were completely covered in mud and
manure. What fun, and what a smell! Once home, a thorough washing of bike and rider was necessary, and clean
clothes put on.
Did you know that the best we can do and be, still looks like dirty rags to God? “All of us have become like one who is
unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. ” Is.64:6 NIV
That’s an awful state to be in, but, praise God, He has promised us a new wardrobe! However, to put new, clean
clothes on, you should take off the old ones and be cleaned. Jesus died for our sins to enable us to do just that. The
blood of Christ will truly cleanse us from top to toe, inside and out, from the past to the future.
Col 3:3-14 in The Message version, sets it out so clearly; “Your old life is dead… that means killing off everything that
was connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you
feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God…
It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. But you know better now, so make
sure it’s all done for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. You’re done with that old life.
It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire. Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe.
Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with His label on it.
So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness,
humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offence. Forgive
as quickly and as completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your
basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it”
Can you look in the mirror now and say, ‘Wow, I’m dressed like Royalty.’? If you are a child of the King, then you’re
Royal, and you should be wearing His clothes.
